The mineral in its pure state :

selenite, a variety of gypsum which is then powder

after being pulverised and 'cooked'.

Preparation of the design/board and its colouring.

A mallet and chisel is used to engrave

the ornamental motif of the slab

on a support which may be stone,

marble or entirely od scagliola.

Prepaartion of the meschia(mixture):

this is obtained by mixing selenite powder with

pigments and natural glues.

Further engraving with a graver in order to obtain fine detailed touches.

Further more fluid mixes of scagliola

are inserted into these furrows or channels.

The surfaces are smoothed with pumice.

When the various engravings and colourings

have been completed, oil/wax anf polishing

stones are used to give a shine to the product.
