Erik August Frandsen (b. 1957) is a self-taught Danish artist who was born and raised in a small village near Randers. As a teenager, he met the artist Poul Gernes and subsequently began traveling (1976–1979) to refine his practice, studying ceramics in Greece, sculpture in Carrara, and printmaking in Paris. He moved to Copenhagen in 1981, joining the "De Unge Vilde" (Wild Youth) art movement and co-founding the collective Værkstedet Værst alongside artists such as Lars Nørgård and Christian Lemmerz. Today, he works between Copenhagen, Nordfalster, and Como. His inspiration stems from daily life, art history, and artists like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, with clear influences from Art Deco and Rococo. Frandsen experiments with a wide range of materials—from rubber and photography to stainless steel sculptures and Venetian mosaics—reinterpreting classic motifs such as still lifes and florals (often featuring weeds in unconventional vases) through an innovative lens. Having launched in the 1980s, his career has left a lasting mark on the Danish art scene.
